00:10 Just The Tonic @ The Caves, Just The Wee Room (Venue 88) Aug 19-26th
Bunbury Rating – ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is an odd little show and one of the true gems of the fringe although it’s not what you might expect.
A synthesiser is played in the background while images of fictional shows flash up on a screen accompanied by descriptions of what to expect from the shows. It is here that the magic of this show lies. There is no spoken word element to the performance but the descriptions are a work of pure genius. While reading one or two of these I found myself thinking that I’d probably watch this or that programme. I don’t know what that says about me but what I was seeing was strangely addictive.
Throughout the show the short show descriptions became more surreal and dark aided by the music which, at times was downright creepy.
For me, this show is on at the right time, in the right room in the right venue and has tp be seen. It’s a really treat and something more than a bit unique and unusual.
Bunbury Magazine – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
John and Claire Lenahan present a magic show with a difference, a showcase of magic standards with a twist which beautifully weaves the spell-binding and the hilarious. Their funny and engaging introduction oozes the charm and chemistry which cannot fail to draw the audience into their world.
This is a show which has card tricks, rope tricks, tissue tricks, the Chinese linking rings and much more besides, but this is not conventional magic. There is a beautiful and dark undercurrent of energy which washes through every moment of this show. The humour throughout has a great depth, with moments touching on the almost-vulgar while maintaining an intense amicability which keeps the audience on their toes and the edge of their seats from the first second to their last.
With each moment carefully planned, they are able to act right in the moment, an on-the-spot energy that can only come with being at the top of their game.
This is the first time John has been back to the Fringe in almost 3 decades, returning to show Claire the ropes – she did steal his act after all. John’s seasoned performance skills, combined with Claire’s chaotic energy, make the perfect combination. This uncle & niece sparkle with an energy and wit that could win over any audience.
